This theory is something that's been on my mind, and I thought I'd share my reasons for backing it up...and if a backstory episode for Willie doesn't happen, then this is awkward.
1. Willie is one of the few supporting characters left. He appears a LOT throughout the series, and even has maybe the most prominent catchphrase in the show. Especially in seasons 3 and 4, characters such as Xixi, Pancho, Hector, and Horst have had, in different ways, episodes focusing on them. Pancho was very quickly developed from a socially awkward, minor character to a shifty conman with a sad past. Ted is inarguably the most prominent secondary lemur character, and is shown randomly hanging out with KJ or helping him out at different occasions. The episode that focused the most on Willie (The King and Mrs. Mort) didn't even show much dialogue with him, but it undoubtedly confirmed for us that he is smarter than pretty much everyone else, but not in a snobby, grumpy way.
